Hi I own Nikon 300mm 2.8 af-I & I mainly used for lunar & super moon shooting; I agree it’s too old & parts is scared, but this is basically a matter of used, really very heavy & I used manfrotto & gimbal tripod combo attached to tc2x-iii & d500; I never had any complain for the 3years shooting all lunar eclipses I'm looking for a 300/2.8 type lens to shoot sports.

The AF was slow and the motor system sounded like a toy car's electric motor. It is slower than an AF-S and slower than the newer 400/2.8 AF-I.
